Ketchikan: Glen Thompson Officially Terminates Campaign - Glen Thompson has officially terminated his campaign for State Representative for District 36 (Ketchikan) in the 2014 State Primary election which will take place on August 19, 2014.

Thompson stated that, “After considerable reflection upon my existing personal commitments to work, family, and the community, plus the added sacrifices that come with a campaign for higher public office, it does not make sense for me to continue to pursue election to state office at this time. My analysis of preliminary campaign efforts makes it clear that the financial sacrifice and time commitment is not workable at this time in my life. I have decided that I can be more effective continuing my role in local politics while pursuing my livelihood. Also, suspending the campaign now rather than later, should offer the opportunity to others who have stayed out of the race so far, but may now wish to campaign, sufficient time to do so.”
Thompson said he intends to faithfully serve the remainder of his third term on the Ketchikan Gateway Borough Assembly.
A three term Assembly member for the Ketchikan Gateway Borough, Thompson filed his Letter of Intent with the Alaska Public Offices Commission to be a candidate in the 2014 State Primary election for the State House of Representatives in September 2013. - More...

Alaska: Alaska Among Six Sites Selected by FAA for Cutting-Edge Drone Research By MARY KAUFFMAN - The "drones" are coming to Alaska - research that is. The University of Alaska will serve as one of six official Federal Aviation Administration unmanned aircraft system test sites, the federal agency announced today.
According to the FAA, the University of Alaska's proposal was chosen making Alaska one of the six test sites joining Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Virginia as testing grounds for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The Alaska-led team includes state agencies and companies in Oregon and Hawaii who joined Alaska's effort. In total, 58 companies and companies are part of the Alaska-led effort, according to ACUASI's Greg Walker of the University of Alaska.
“The University is both honored and challenged with this selection,” Ro Bailey, Deputy Director, Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems at University of Alaska Fairbanks, said. “The benefits for the state, for its citizens, for business and technology, and for the nation are exciting and potentially very dramatic.”

“The University of Alaska Fairbanks’ reputation as an experienced, safe and savvy operator using a variety of UAS types in diverse missions and locations all over the globe undoubtedly played a major part in our selection,” said Ro Bailey, deputy director of ACUASI and the intended Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex director. “Alaska, Oregon and Hawaii offer exceptional climatic and geographic diversity, lightly populated airspace and overwater test opportunities that can support the majority of FAA needs.”
The Pan-Pacific UAS Test Range Complex will be managed by the University of Alaska Fairbanks and the test site will build on the ongoing work of the Alaska Center for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration, which is part of the UAF Geophysical Institute. Operations of the test range complex are slated to begin in mid-2014.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced today the selection of the six public entities that will develop unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) research and test sites around the country. These congressionally-mandated test sites will conduct critical research into the certification and operational requirements necessary to safely integrate unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) into the national airspace over the next several years.
Today, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) perform border and port surveillance, help with scientific research and environmental monitoring, support public safety by law enforcement agencies, help state universities conduct research, and support various other missions for government entities.
In selecting the six test site operators, the FAA considered geography, climate, location of ground infrastructure, research needs, airspace use, safety, aviation experience and risk. In totality, these six test applications achieve cross-country geographic and climatic diversity and help the FAA meet its UAS research needs. - More...

SUSAN STAMPER BROWN: Suggestions for Liberals in 2014 - Because things are not going well for liberals who have driven the Democrat Party out of the American mainstream, I thought it would be helpful to come up with a list of suggestions for them to consider in 2014. So here goes:
Touch a gun. Guns do not bite, nor do they kill. Instead, guns protect potential victims. There is a reason gun free zones are considered magnets for mass killers. Gun-free zones are helpless victim zones. Here in the Arctic, guns protect residents from dangerous animals (and people) and also help put food on the table. A big moose can provide 700 pounds of lean and healthy meat all winter.
Share in a meaningful debate. Be warned: It is not for the weak-minded, spineless, or those with an undisciplined tongue. It takes a lot of practice. Using inane adjectives to discredit your opponent is juvenile and ignorant, but thoughtful rebuttal is enlightening and refreshing.
Seek truth. The truth will set you free, right after it exasperates you, which is why it is wise to form a few relationships with those with whom you do not necessarily agree. Truth is not contingent upon your personal interpretation; truth is simply truth. Expand your knowledge by staying informed. Your news diet should include alternate points of view beyond Comedy Central or MSNBC, if for no other purpose than to understand the other side of the argument. - More...

WILL DURST: WI$H LI$T FOR 2014 - It's the most wonderful time of the year. And finally over. Thank the maker. Because if The Little Drummer Boy was played within my immediate vicinity one more time, somebody was going to have a bacon-flavored candy cane crammed into an orifice that doesn't naturally accommodate candy canes. Bacon or otherwise.
Merchants are whining that more money could have been spent celebrating the anniversary of the birth of the Baby Jesus, but perhaps Christian consumers got hip to their little mark-down games and are poised for the post-holiday sales, which in the tradition of modern retailing creep were being pushed before Santa flew south. Thinking five years is the over/under before the sanctity of Christmas performs the same dark death-dive Thanksgiving took this year.
But to insure that some traditions don't get inadvertently tossed out with the ribbons, wrapping paper and littlest nephew, let me offer up my annual scathingly incisive yet curiously refreshing, WILL DUR$T'$ WI$H LI$T FOR 2014 for people who maybe didn't find the presents they truly deserved under the tree. - More...

Open Letter: Taking money from the veterans By A.M. Johnson - As one of the Senate Republicans who voted to end debate with 60 votes allows what Chief Master Sergeant Wooten expounds. To this add that knowing all of you Senators read ALL the content of ALL legislation before voting, you knew of the results that vote contained. You knew that you were dis'ing our service men and women. You knew. Shame on you, double shame on you. - More...

Build the damn Road By A.M. Johnson -
The King Cove road issue as reported in your fine publication reflects the sound of howling banshees. The following three quotes by our elected Congressional officials, who in my opinion, couldn't lead a drunk to a beer hall, all sound so condescending, concerned, and promising to do what they should have done many times over. Makes one ill to hear all the bull feathers they stir up after the fact. Heck, any common sense person who follows this Leftist administration could have told them what the outcome was going to be. But never fear, Senator "Murky" Murkowski threatened to with hold she vote and support for Jewell's confirmation, lot of good that did and more so, each and every time she, and Representative "Foghorn" Young reach over the aisle, they have their teeth and as a result, Alaskan's teeth kicked in. As to Senator "Bagman"Begich, being a good Democrat, again talks out of the other side of the mouth. Yada yada yada. - More...

It's never too late to do the right thing By Joseph J. Chadwell -
I would like to thank Senator Murkowski for the Christmas Present she and others on Capital Hill gave to America's retired Military Men and Women. I would like to thank her for cutting their Coast Of Living Adjustments (COLA) to their retired pay. Of all the wasteful spending or lack of any attempt at shared sacrifice (chained CPI COLA) for everyone receiving federal entitlement payments; they instead went after America's Defenders of Freedom. - More...

Pot calling the kettle black By John Suter -
Have you noticed in the ADN 12/24/13 page A-8, Izembek: Road supporters say they don’t plan to give up fight. 3rd column over second paragraph down the governor says, “unconscionable” and another “irrational decision by the federal government that denies Alaskans access – in this case access to emergency treatment.” - More...

Thank You By Jamie May -
I would like to thank the person that returned the $262.00 I dropped at Walmart on Saturday the 21st. When I was checking out with my Christmas gifts and I realized I had dropped the money I was really upset. I traced back my steps and could not find it so my last resort was to leave my name and number with customer service just in case it was returned. I can tell you that I was quite surprised that it was returned to customer service. I assumed I would never see that money again. - More...

A Very Merry Christmas By Congressman Don Young -
Ho ho ho, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! As Alaskans, we are fortunate to live in a state of such majestic beauty. As many of you know, my love for Alaska began more than 50 years ago and has only grown in the years since. One of my great loves is our Alaskan spirit, especially during the Christmas season; the generosity of our people and our giving nature certainly sets us apart. - More...

RE: Arrest At Elementary School By Heather Morris -
I am appalled by the letters I have read regarding this sad incident. All of you claim to be Mothers but a Mother would know when children are involved you do as minimal damage as possible. Apparently, you seem to have forgotten that the gentleman who was apprehended has children. In fact a good portion of his family is local. How horribly inconsiderate of you all to discuss this on a public forum such as this. - More...

RE: Arrest at Elementary School By Giovanna M. Trentanelli -
Regarding Amanda Martin's letter in which she accuses the Trooper of knocking an innocent little girl to the ground face first hurting her and dirtying her sweet Christmas Dress, I would like to clarify that it was NOT the Trooper who knocked the child to the ground; it was Mr. Simpson, the FLEEING FELON who knocked the child down. - More...

RE: Arrest at Elementry School By Christine Furey -
In response to everyone that has delivered an opinion on this matter, I would like to say that I do agree with Amanda. I think she is very valid in her point. I think that the whole situation happened at the wrong place, at the wrong time. Mr. Simpson was at Fawn Mountain to watch his child perform, if he was truly attempting to evade the police would he have really showed up, not to mention the fact that he had been seen in days earlier at various locations throughout town doing very normal things like buying cigarettes. This does not sound like someone who is hiding out. - More...
