National: Many companies moving manufacturing back to U.S. By ALLISON BRUCE - Companies that once went abroad to manufacture or source materials are now starting to look closer to home. as they encounter the challenge of trying to do things more cheaply abroad.

For some, it's about reducing their shipping costs and carbon footprint. Others are finding labor isn't as cheap as they expected, or workmanship is poor. And there is a growing consumer push to buy from companies that make their goods in the United States and create jobs.

"As consumers, we've really forgotten how important manufacturing is and what it's all about," said Rob Akers, chief operating officer for the National Tooling and Machining Association.

When Oxnard, Calif., footwear company Sockwa Inc. started in 2007, it was a practical decision to manufacture in China, said CEO David Zasloff. It didn't make sense to start in the U.S., knowing production would need to move to China when the company and its sales grew.

"That was where the industry was," he said.

But although the factory in China that makes the soles has produced high-quality items and cost savings, Zasloff has been working with another factory that isn't managed well, creates a lot of waste and keeps saying it needs to increase prices.

He wants to bring at least part of the production back to the U.S. to more rapidly bring new products to market and have more control over production. His previous company manufactured here, and he loved the control, quality and speed to market. - More...

That's the business plan for a startup that has signed up hedge funds and one major bank for its services.

With millions of desperate people struggling to avert foreclosure, it sounds counterintuitive, but Loan Value Group says its approach will help shield banks from the bigger losses inherent in foreclosures.

The raging crisis over improperly vetted documents that's thrown the nation's foreclosure process into turmoil underscores the need for Loan Value's services, said Frank Pallotta, executive vice president of the Rumson, N.J., company.

"We've seen a huge pickup in inquiries (by banks) with the robo-signing controversy," he said. "It's never been more important for them to keep their accounts current; nobody wins in a delinquency situation." - More...

TOM PURCELL: Recession? Not in Washington D.C. - I feel guilty about it, if you want to know the truth.

Patrice Hill, chief economic correspondent for The Washington Times, reports that while the down economy has caused the rest of America to struggle, Washington, D.C., is flourishing.

While America has lost 8.3 million jobs since the beginning of the recession, the Washington metropolitan region has lost only 35,000.

And by August 2009, not only were all 35,000 of those jobs recovered, but, says The Washington Post, 20,000 new ones were added — and thousands more have been added since.

Thus, while the jobless rate hovers near 10 percent nationally, it's around 6 percent in D.C., the lowest unemployment rate among America's 49 largest metro areas.

When times are good in America, they're better in Washington, where coffers are flush with tax revenue.

When times are bad in America, they're better yet in Washington, where policymakers borrow and pass out billions. - More...

DAVE KIFFER: Driving in Ketchikan can be a real 'drag - I was driving by Kayhi the other day and I noticed a shiny, apparently new, Corvette in the student parking area.

Naturally my first response was what kind of CENSORED BLANKETY CENSORED parent would give their teenaged-brained offspring something like that. That was my grumpy, grownup brain.

My teenaged brain said “cool.”

I can still remember my teenage years, well at least some of them.

And a Corvette would not have been out of place in the Kayhi parking lot back then.

In those days, I had the unusual vehicle and not by choice. I had inherited a red pickup truck with a camper on the back. It may not have been cool, but it was useful. More on that later.

Meanwhile I pined after the cooler cars of my friends; the Firebirds, the Camaros, the Mustangs. Even the “family” cars that my friends drove were cool. Rivieras, T-Birds, funky old Mercedes.  Almost no pickups in those days.

A red pickup truck back then was the vehicular equivalent of an Atari in an X-box world. But I digress. - More...

WHO’S REALLY LYING? Hanger - He’s a nice enough looking fellow, this Joe Miller, and speaks with a rigid enthusiasm about the power he wants you to give him, but what he spews is a vicious ugliness that is completely divergent with the reality in this country today.
