Ketchikan:
Remember Pearl Harbor: Dec, 7, 1941 By JUNE ALLEN - It was Sunday morning, Dec. 7, 1941. At 7:55 a.m. Hawaii time, Japanese Imperial forces launched a surprise air attack on the U.S. Navy's fleet moored at Pearl Harbor and the nearby Army installation. Nineteen ships were sunk or damaged, crippling the U.S. fleet. And in a period of only a few hours, 2,300 Americans were left dead.

Remember Pearl Harbor

USS Arizona Pearl Harbor Attack, 7 December 1941
Official U.S. Navy Photograph, from the collections of the Naval Historical Center.

One of those was Navy Ensign Irvin Thompson, 24, of Ketchikan. He was lost in the sinking of the battleship Oklahoma, Alaska's first serviceman casualty of World War II. In his honor, flags would fly at half-mast throughout Alaska Dec. 21, by proclamation of Territorial Governor Ernest Gruening.

In spite of the fact that the United States had declared neutrality in Hitler's "European war" on Sept. 5, 1939, most citizens expected that eventually the country would be drawn into the conflict. What few expected was that any nation would dare to attack the United States! The attack on Pearl Harbor came as an outrage and war was immediately declared.

In Ketchikan, in shock like the rest of the nation, there were whispered rumors of Japanese cannery workers and bookkeepers having hidden short wave radios. In fact, a more specific rumor said that a spy at Waterfall Cannery had been evacuated by an enemy submarine under cover of night. There was a rumor of enemy submarines off Prince of Wales Island - a rumor that soon after earned some credibility when remote areas in British Columbia and the Oregon coast were lobbed with incendiary bombs launched from enemy subs.

The distant Hawaiian Islands and the rest of the world, accessible to Ketchikan only by steamship or Clipper flights, had seemed remote to the little town - until that day. Until Dec. 7, 1941, one of the looming local problems was finding a way to move the garbage dump from the unsightly, overflowing shoreline just south of the Coast Guard base to a new location at what is now called Wolfe Point. Suddenly Ketchikan found itself a not-so-distant part of the world in which garbage dumps were the least of the problems. - More...

Fish Factor: Cuts in Pacific halibut catches proposed By LAINE WELCH - Next year will be no exception to the five year trend of trimming Pacific halibut catches. There’s a lot of halibut out there, but the fish are growing so slowly it is keeping a downward press on the amount of fish being made available for harvest.  Fisheries for the Pacific coast, British Columbia and Alaska could be cut by 19 percent next year if managers accept the recommendations of fishery scientists.

The International Pacific Halibut Commission released preliminary numbers last week that show a combined catch of 41 million pounds for fisheries on the Pacific coast, British Columbia and Alaska. Of that, 32.5 million pounds is allocated to Alaska fishermen, down from 40 million pounds of halibut this year.

The reductions would be especially brutal again for Southeast Alaska where halibut catch limits have dropped by more than 60% over the past five years.  For 2011, a whopping 47 percent cut is being proposed for the Panhandle to just 2.3 million pounds.

For Alaska’s biggest halibut hole, the Central Gulf, next year’s catch could be slashed by 28 percent to 14.3 million pounds.  The recommended catch for the Western Gulf   is 7.5 million pounds, down 24 percent.  Smaller fisheries along the Aleutians could see slight increases to 4.6 million pounds; likewise; Bering Sea fishermen would get a slight bump to 3.7 million pounds of halibut.

The reduced supply of halibut will have a serious market impact, said analyst John Sackton of Seafood.com.

“Already halibut prices are the highest in over 10 years with dressed fish wholesaling for over $7 in Seattle. The lower landings already have buyers bidding up prices and that will be a bigger problem next year.  Halibut is a very popular food service fish on a lot of menus and it is not easy for many restaurants to change course,” he said.

Sackton cautioned that total removals of sport and commercially caught halibut have been running 9-14% per year above recommended levels.

“The fish are growing so slowly that the scientists are asking the halibut commission to consider a management strategy to reduce catches even further given the current biological situation. It’s not good news.”

The IPHC will make final decisions on 2011 halibut catches at its annual meeting January 25-29 in Vancouver. The Pacific halibut fishery opens in March. - More...

Alaska: Begich Urges Joe Miller to Give Up Election Challenge; Miller Tells Begich to Get Back to Work - With many issues vital for Alaska hanging in the balance, U.S. Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) on Monday called on Senate candidate Joe Miller to drop his legal challenge to last month’s Senate election. Begich said the drawn-out court suit, which is virtually certain to fail, could deny Alaska full representation in the Senate when the new Congress resumes in January.

"It is time for Joe Miller to put Alaska interests ahead of personal ambition and allow the State of Alaska to certify Lisa Murkowski as the winner,” Begich said in a prepared statement.

Failure to certify the election could prevent Senator Murkowski from being sworn into office in early January when other new senators officially take office.

Begich said, “As many in Washington are united against securing funding for important road and public facility projects in individual states, it’s vital that Alaska have both senators putting our unique needs first and fighting for our state. Without both Senators, Alaska’s interests will be at risk on critical issues from energy development to job creation and reducing the national debt in a way that’s fair to Alaskans.”

In response to Senator Begich's request to drop his legal challenge to the election ballot issues, Joe Miller said Begich should "get back to work and stop wasting time in D.C." - More...

National: Homeowners press Congress on toxic Chinese drywall By ISAAC WOLF - Homeowners saddled with toxic drywall want Congress to push China to pay for costly cleanups.

As lawsuits against Chinese wallboard manufacturers make their way through American courts, homeowners say they are struggling without financial relief to renovate their homes. They want the Chinese government to speed up cash settlements -- and they want U.S. officials to make it happen.

"The Chinese government isn't being held accountable for a toxic product," said Kelley Spellman, one of about a dozen homeowners from Southeastern states who aired their grievances Monday to U.S. senators. "Nobody is stepping up to the plate to be accountable." - More...

letter Keep KPU Telecommunications Public; Contract Out Ketchikan Public Library By Robert Warner - With the coming holiday season it is pathetic to note that Ketchikan city management continues its scheme to sell KPU Telecommunications, an organization that actually serves citizens well and earns a profit for the city.  If sold, will we face sharp rate increases?  Will we have to speak with an operator in India when we have a telecommunications problem?  With telecommunications rapidly overtaking traditional books and libraries as the prime source for research and learning, Ketchikan still has the opportunity to develop and shape its own service to fit the needs of our citizens.  This is a rare opportunity, especially for a small community like Ketchikan.  To date KPU Telecommunications has a excellent record of meeting this challenge.  Why can't the city manager start serving the public and answer these important questions before any attempt to sell this division takes place? - More...

letter Kudos to KGH By Jackie Brozena Herter - Our mother Coralee Brozena, who recently passed away, was in Ketchikan General Hospital's long-term care facility for three years. I would publicly like to thank ALL the staff for their wonderful care. We're not always easy to be around as we age and have health/pain issues, but everyone was very kind and caring. Ketchikan should be proud of their fine hospital staff. Dr. Liljgren was very giving of her time and communicated well with the three of us daughters long distance. The peace of mind being able to ask questions and get clarification was invaluable. Our family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts. - More...

letter Part 1: Lowering taxes didn't increase oil output By Sen. Hollis French & Rep. Les Gara - Alaskans deserve a fair share for the oil produced in this state.  Alaska’s Constitution says all Alaskans own our oil in common, and it should be developed for our "maximum benefit."  We also need to encourage production, and jobs. That’s something the Army Corps of Engineers didn't help with when it blocked needed oil development in the National Petroleum Reserve this year.  The truth is that achieving both goals is complex, and if we want strong production and a fair share of oil profits so we can fund our schools, roads, public safety and savings, we need to put aside the sound bites of campaign season. - More...

letter Part 2: Lowering oil taxes doesn't guarantee investment By Sen. Hollis French & Rep. Les Gara - Few subjects provoke more controversy than oil taxes.  If oil is taxed at too high a rate there’s a risk that crucial investments don’t get made in the state’s most important industry.  If oil is taxed at too low a rate then we fail in our constitutional duty to ensure that our oil resources are developed and used for the maximum benefit of all Alaskans. - More...

letter Herring fisheries By Robert McRoberts - Over the years some very good letters have been written on this site -- such as why we should oppose this type of fishery, or some about certain areas. When Kah Shakes fishery first started I was a young boy working for my brother in-law Frank Jaynes. he was trying to keep diversification in his fishing to keep money coming in throughout the year. We would also pack herring on his boat the Patty Lynn. - More...

letter2010 Alaska U.S. Senate election By Trapper Bishop - I am writing this piece to offer some advice for Joe Miller: accept and concede. letterRoe Herring fishery By R.K. Rice - This is largely in response to Kevin Kristovich's letter. You are a lifelong local so you probably remember when as late as the mid 90's Tongass Narrows was teeming with herring every December through January. People jigged bait and pickling herring off the docks. Some used small seine's to harvest bait for longlining shrimping etc. Prior to that East Behm Canal also had a large herring population. Kah Shakes roe herring fishery just suddenly collapsed, along with most of the local herring stocks. - More...

letterWard Cove Deja 'Vu By Mary Lynne Dahl - Once again, Ward Cove is the subject of a questionable purchase by a buyer who has already demonstrated that he either does not have or is not able to raise the money that he offers. He also refuses to disclose, does not keep his word and may, in fact, be just another flim-flam man looking at Ketchikan as an easy mark for his own enrichment plans. A Seattle area man, Kenneth Hopen of Hopen & Associates, a Nevada limited liability corporation, has come up with an offer that has, so far, not put a dime on the table. - More...

letterRE: Herring By Kevin Kristovich - This letter is in response to the comments and concerns made by Lawrence,"Snapper" Carson. For years now, I have been reading about Mr. Carson commenting about the local herring population and how he accuses the Department of Fish and Game for mismanaging the local herring stocks we once had in the Kah Shakes area south of Ketchikan. He also goes on to object to the West Behm Canal area that is designated as a commercial sac roe herring fishery area. - More...

"Once upon a time in the early days of our Western Territory development, a young Eastern newspaper reporter ventured west to witness and report on daily events. Stepping down from the stagecoach in a Western town, he witnessed the crowd gathering around a newly constructed gallows. Inquiring, he found that there was to be a hanging of a young horse thief. letter Miller needs to let go By LeAnn Pickard - Am I the only person who is rather shocked by the way Miller is handling the outcome of the votes? He seeks to challenge misspellings of Murkowski's name, regardless of voter intent, and is now planning on calling for a recount because there were volunteer observers who did not have the training needed and therefore some ballots that should have been challenged were not. The math says that even if he gets all the 8,000+ ballots taken out of the equation, Murkowski is still in the lead by a couple thousand votes. - More...
